The Secret Of Life – As Revealed by Curly…

curly1Yep, there’s a secret.  It’s as old as the ages and timeless.  It’s simple and profound.  It’s right in your own backyard and it requires a journey you’ll never forget.

I’m sure you remember the movie City Slickers, with Billy Crystal as Mitch?  Jack Palance played the old, dust-laden, grisly trail boss Curly.  About half way through the movie Curly and Mitch are having a conversation about life and it’s meaning.  The conversation turns to “The Secret of Life.”

Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is?
Mitch: No, what?
Curly: This.    [holds up one finger]

Well here…. just watch it…(slightly extended version for context!)

Living life on purpose is what this is about.  “On purpose” has a couple of meanings depending on how you read it.

  1. Consciously in that everyday is a plan.  Everyday you decide what you do and who you are while you’re doing it.  You’re not just ‘accidentally’ drifting through the day.
  2. With specificity; with a specific purpose.  Live each day with a predetermined overall purpose in mind: Your mission, your quest, your reason for living.

Combining the two you get:  Live your life in daily submission to your overall purpose.  Plan each day such that your every action both reveals and defines your purpose for being here.  The result is living your life in such a way that when you’re gone, there’s a void.

This kind of living takes some work.  It’s not just living each day.  It’s living each day completely on purpose.  In Real Moments: Discover the Secret for True Happiness, Barbara De Angeles tells us it’s not as important what you’re doing but that you’re fulfilling your purpose.  You can fulfill your purpose at work, watching your kids, on a date, washing the clothes, fixing the car.  It’s about a deeper level of living that transcends whatever activity you happen to be going at the moment.

In your business pursuits you can live your purpose in every transaction, every phone conversation, very blog post, every video.  There’s more to your business than making money.  It’s running your business such that each step you take places your foot dead center in the middle of your purpose.  The result is stepping daily from the center of your purpose directly into the center of your purpose and then on to the the center of your purpose.

Conduct your business on purpose.  It will make all the difference.
