Mind If I Kick You Right Between The Ears?

“The purpose of a man is in action not thought.” —Thomas Carlyle
I was pondering the other day over the course of my life and I was reliving some pretty crazy memories. I remembered working for my Boy Scout Merit Badges, getting up every morning for 4 years to deliver the San Diego Union to 80-100 homes in my La Mesa, CA neighborhood, arriving at school early every morning to practice running the high hurdles, going to work everyday after school as a box boy and then later a checker at Lucky Stores in Los Angeles, CA, slugging through Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA (throwing hand grenades, riding helicopters, firing an M-60 machine gun, and running the obstacle course — Way Too Much Fun). I thought back to my first solo in an airplane around Carlsbad, CA, taking up the piano at age 30 and practicing in the evenings after work, starting my insurance agency from scratch, being SO BROKE I couldn’t even pay attention and then losing my home and moving my pregnant wife and daughter to a small rental house in El Cajon, CA. The agony and the ecstasy.
I’ve had some tremendous failures and some amazing results. Most of my friends have lived a much more level existence. Many years ago I adopted a philosophy: Just Do It. (years before Nike!) (I should have sued them!
I realized on some level the truth of the following statement.
It is my short-term (even daily) actions alone that accomplish my long-term results.
If you want some change in your life, purpose in your mind to set about achieving DAILY RESULTS. Transfer your thoughts into actions. Every day. This little mantra or mindset or whatever you want to call it will produce amazing results in your life. When you grasp and apply this, NOTHING is impossible for you.
If you want to be in a different place, you MUST do different behaviors every day. I’m sure I don’t have to remind you of the old saying, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.”
Most people want to accomplish great things. Most don’t. Why is this? It’s because they keep THINKING and never get around to DOING !
I’m sure you’ve heard that dreams, goals, vision, values, ideals, and desire are all critical to your success. While that is certainly true, those are all thoughts, ideas and ideals that exist in your head. They reside right between your ears.
Please allow me to KICK YOU RIGHT BETWEEN THE EARS and send those thoughts to action. DAILY, we need to transfer our thoughts, goals, visions and desires into action! Just ruminate with me for a minute….
Who loses weight — The one who reads about healthy recipes or the one who gets up and walks 3 miles every day?
Who retires in the tropics — The one who studies and knows all about life on the beach or the one who saves and invests religiously to have enough money to go there?
Who has the best marital relationship — The one who reads the books or the one who makes it a priority to sit down and talk with their spouse for 30 minutes a day?
Who writes the books — The one who really wants to become an author or the one who gets up 45 minutes early every day and writes?
Who makes the most sales — The one who believes they can become a great sales person or the one who keeps a log on their desk to be sure they make an extra 20 sales calls a day?
Who builds a successful online business — The one who hopes and dreams of hosting 1000 seat webinars or the one who loses 2 hours of sleep a night in order to build a blog, study SEO and Pay Per Click, and writes 5 properly key-worded articles a week and submits them to over a hundred online article directories?
I think you get the point! Desires, beliefs and goals MUST be translated into activity. Everything bouncing around between your ears MUST be kicked into action!
I make many decisions every day based on what I call “The Rocking Chair Principle.” When I’m 99 years old, sitting on the front porch in my rocking chair pondering the course of my life, what do I want to look back and see that I’ve ACCOMPLISHED? Not what did I think about, what did I plan, what did I want, but WHAT DID I DO?
Ask yourself these questions…
- What long-term accomplishments do I want to see come to reality?
- What short-term actions do I need to complete to move toward that reality?
- What can I do TODAY to begin to make that vision a reality?
Answer those three questions for your greatest aspirations.
Complete the tasks you need every day.
Marvel 2, 3, 5 10 years from now at what you’ve done!
One more time. Commit this to memory.
It is my short-term (even daily) actions alone that accomplish my long-term results.
